Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who was present in the House, expressed regret and anguish over the incident. "What happened today should hang our heads in shame," said Omar. In his brief address, an apologetic Omar said, "while on one hand we have been preaching respect and honour for the women, on the other, such a behaviour by an elected representative against a woman member was reprehensible and should be condemned." Omar called upon the Speaker to use his authority and instruments available to him to restore order in the House. "You are a humble man Mr Speaker, but you have ample power and authority to control such members who can threaten a lady member of assault," said Omar. The Chief Minister later called Sakina to his seat and talked to her for some time. Earlier, Minister for PHE Sham Lal Sharma also condemned the incident. Rising on a point of order, Sham Lal said that the Chair has been very liberal and regretted that unparliamentary language has been used in the House. |
