Advani missed the golden opportunity

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 14: September 13 provided a golden opportunity to the BJP veteran and former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani to become darling of the nation and enhance his political stature by showing magnanimity and large-heartedness, but he missed it and the result was that he became an object of criticism and ridicule. Some of his critics dismissed him as power hungry. On September 13, the BJP Parliamentary Board, which consists of 12 member, including Advani and ailing Atal Bihari Vajpayee, appreciated the mood of the nation and sentiments of the party cadres and supporters and named Gujarat Chief Minister and chairman of the BJP central campaign committee Narendra Modi as the party's Prime Ministerial candidate for the upcoming very crucial and epoch-making general election.
Everyone was hoping that Advani will not reenact Goa, that he will participate in the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting and that he will bless Modi, who has over the period won over the nation by dint of hard work. All the surveys conducted by the various independent agencies and even by secular news channels like ABP News, CNN-IBN and Times Now during the past two years had clearly suggested that Narendra Modi was the only choice of the nation and leaders like Advani had become a story of the past, but Advani, instead of appreciating the national mood and exigencies of the time, chose to act as a stumbling block.
Advani had opposed the elevation of Modi to the position of chairman of the BJP election campaign committee and resigned from most of the positions he held in the party in June this year and created an awkward situation for the party, but later on withdrew his resignation when requested by other senior leaders of the party. Advani opposed tooth and nail the idea of Modi being nominated as the party's Prime Ministerial candidate despite the fact that the top RSS leadership and almost all the senior BJP leaders repeatedly appealed to him not to act as a stumbling block and join the Parliamentary Board meeting to bless humble and able administrator Narendra Modi. He continued to openly oppose Modi and BJP national president Rajnath Singh, who had played a unique role in the Goa conclave of the party in ensuring the elevation of Modi as the chairman of the BJP election campaign committee. Yesterday, he not only undermined his stature by opposing Modi but also created an awkward situation by releasing a two-paragraph controversial letter to the media at a time when the entire BJP leadership and the BJP cadres and supporters were in a festive mood for obvious reasons and when all the NDA allies like Akali Dal Badal and Shiv Sena had extended their unstinted support to the Modi's candidature for the Prime Ministerial post saying the nation will achieve all-round progress under his ale leadership.
There is still time for him to salvage his reputation and he can salvage his reputation and win over the nation and the party by welcoming the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting. Such a noble gesture will help him enhance his stature and silence the critics of the party which he served for more than 60 years.
