JAMMU, Sept 14: The naming of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi by BJP as its Prime Ministerial candidate has kick started a political slug fest provoking even the sophisticated politicians to take a jibe at him.
Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad who was present in Jammu in connection with a function commented on Modi's elevation by saying nobody becomes 'Sikander' by assuming the name.
'Naam Sikander Rakhne Se Koi Sikander Nahi Ban Jaata," (Nobody becomes 'Sikander' by naming himself as 'Sikander')' Azad told reporters on his arrival at University of Jammu here this morning.
The Union Minister was here in the town to attend a day-long Health and Awareness programme held at Jammu University.
'Though it is an internal matter of BJP and I cannot comment more than this,' said the Minister.
Responding to Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's remarks about Narendra Modi, BJP National Executive Member and J&K Chief Spokesperson, Dr Jitendra Singh said here that such remarks should rather be taken as a compliment for Modi because that only exposes how much unnerved and panicky, the parties like Congress and National Conference are feeling over declaration of Modi's name as BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate.
Singh said, first of all, a politician as senior as Ghulam Nabi Azad is expected to know better than most of us that it is not in keeping with the tradition of dignified public comment to pass such personalized, derogatory remarks about the leader of another political party... and that too about a leader who happens to be the Prime Ministerial candidate of the country's principal opposition party.
Having said that, Dr Jitendra Singh hastened to add, what is significant to note is that such unsavoury references to Narendra Modi, betray the Congress party's frustration and panic over his declaration as BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate and infact serve as an inadvertant acknowledgement of Modi's formidable status unmatched by any Congress leader. What is still more interesting is that in the State of Jammu and Kashmir, not only the Congress party but even the Kashmir-centric regional parties like National Conference are so intensely disturbed by the declaration of Modi as BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate that we find in the media more number of statements about Modi from National Conference leaders than even from the BJP.
Singh went on to state that Modi's anointment by BJP National President Rajnath Singh was in recognition of the countrywide mood not only among the party rank and file but also outside the party among the civil society and therefore it is the obligation of every right-thinking Indian to respect this decision. He said Modi's name has come as a ray of hope for a nation yearning for a change and liberation from the menace of rising prices, corruption, scams, misgovernance and dynastic rule. |
