Lifts curfew, registers FIR in Shopian killings
Govt blinks to pressure

Et Report

Srinagar, Sept 19 : Slammed by both PDP and separatists for continuous curfew in Shopian, Government on Thursday made an abject surrender by accepting their demands. The government not only lifted curfew for the limited period but also agreed to file an FIR in the killing of four youth.
Omar Abdullah government even decided to shift CRPF camp from Gargen town, where four youth had died.
The state government had first imposed curfew after the killing. It decided to act tough and tried to send the message that it would not be cowed down by any act of violence and also not be separatists.
However, with the continuation of curfew for more than a week, and public anger trained against the Omar government , it gave a handle to the separatists to whip up the government. Fearing that similar sentiments could spill over the entire Kashmir region, the Omar government, still under the hangover of Zubin Mehta's concert, finally decided to give in.
It did lift curfew for some time , though without giving prior notice about and also agreed to shift the CRPF camp from there. The state government has been repeatedly shifting blame on para-military forces for all its failures. The CRPF is being blamed for the killing and in the incident of Gool it also shifted the camp of BSF.
The government has been by this act deliberately trying to put any symbol of Central government as an enemy of Kashmiris and also inciting people against it.Government also decided to register an FIR only after PDP president Mehbooba Mufti decided to sit on an indefinite dharna.
The government has failed miserably to gauge the public mood and is committing mistakes repeatedly. At the start of 2010 violence, the government first acted leniently but when killings continued it decided to impose curfew strictly.
The government has now got the feeling that protests can be stopped by curfew and in entire Jammu province it imposed curfew when three people died in Kishtwar. Omar government has failed in containing violence and it's giving handle to separatists. The government has lost confidence of the public and it's adding more fire to peoples anger.
