| Police foils Assembly gherao by panchayat members | | 8 AJKPC leaders detained | | Srinagar, Oct 1: At least eight sarpanches and senior leaders of All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) were detained by police here on Tuesday when a large number of panchayat members tried to march towards assembly. The detained srapanches include provincial president AJKPC Imtiaz Afzal Beig and provincial secretary Bashir Ahmed Malik who were lodged in Shergarhi and Shaheed Gunj police stations. Reports said a large number of panches and sarpanches of Kashmir valley had gathered at Exhibition ground near civil secretariat here to march towards assembly complex where the autumn assembly session was going on. They were demanding the implementation of 73rd Amendment of Indian constitution in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and protesting against the 'failure' of Panchayati Raj in the state. However, sensing the trouble, the government had deployed large number of policemen in and around the Exhibition ground to foil the march. However, reports said more than 250 sarpanches gave police a slip. But as soon about 100 of them led by Imtiaz Beig and Bashir Malik tried to come out from the Exhibition ground and march towards assembly, police detained them. Besides Imtiaz and Bashir, Aftaab Ahmed Beig, Nazir Ahmed Laroo, Bashir Ahmed Rather, Ghulam Hassan Rather, Ghulam Mohidin and Abdul Ahad Chatt were also detained. The agitating sarpanches alleged that Panchayati Raj had completely failed in the state and the government has rendered the institution completely defunct. Demanding implementation of 73rd Amendment, they said they will continue their struggle. |
