Says, not satisfied with investigations, takes dig at issuance of successive statements

SRINAGAR, Oct 1: Accepting that State Government mishandled situation in the aftermath of recent Shopian killings, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said that a retired High Court judge will probe the Shopian incident so that truth comes before the people.
Replying to the adjournment motion moved by People’s Democratic Party (PDP) while seeking discussion on the recent firing incidents in the State, Omar said that successive statements that came after the Shopian incident complicated matters thus putting the whole system of investigations into a quandary. He said the matter cannot be probed by a sitting judge since they are not spared by the concerned authorities.
"It is important that successive statements on the Shopian incident are stopped so that there is no more confusion. I am not satisfied with the investigations so far as the real facts about the incident have not come to the fore. The people should be patient and wait for the probe to be completed and before that it would not be prudent to come to any conclusion," said Omar.
The Chief Minister while referring to the statement that one of the four persons killed in Shopian firing incident is a resident of Bihar said that nobody from that State has come forward and claim body of the concerned person. He said that police and other security agencies should verify the antecedents of the three persons killed in the Shopian firing incident.
"The situation is murky right now and there is confusion all around. Giving the successive statements issued so far on Shopian incident it is quite likely that people would not believe the results of the probe. Even if something is proven against the three persons killed in the incident still then people won't believe us as there is mistrust among their ranks," said Omar.
The Chief Minister said that action would be taken against police or security forces personnel if they are found guilty in the Shopian incident. He disproved allegations of PDP legislators that security forces or police have been free license to kill people. He said during Unified Command and review meetings directions are issued to police and security forces personnel to exercise restraint while dealing with the common people.
"Kishtwar was not a case of excessive use of force by security forces and it was a case of communal clash. A judicial enquiry has already been ordered in this case and truth will come out once the probe is completed. I did not force Sajad Kitchloo to resign but it was he who himself resigned from the Council of Ministers. Some elements wanted to incite the sentiments of people in Kishtwar but their nefarious designs were defeated by the timely action of the State Government," said Omar.
Referring to his statement on firing of Border Security Force (BSF) in Gool-Ramban, Chief Minister said that same was based on preliminary inputs with people confusing it to be the final version about the incident. He said since the issue is being probed by Divisional Commissioner, Jammu people should wait for the results of probe.
Omar advised the political parties to spare a thought for the families of 20 police personnel and 57 security forces personnel who lost their lives while fighting militants in various areas of State during this year so far. He pitched for fast track courts so that security forces or police personnel are tried for their wrong doings if any.
