| Union Govt tightens noose, withholds funds for tunnels | | | Arun Singh JAMMU, Oct 1: Miffed over the non performance of the State Government, the Union Government has withheld funds for proposed three tunnels of the State even after lapse of half of current financial year ostensibly hampering the development work in the State. Sources told Early Times that State had sent Detail Project Reports (DPR) of Mughal Road Tunnel, Razdan Pass Tunnel and Gurez Tunnel a year ago but State Government is still waiting for the funds despite their approval. "Nearly a year ago the DPRs were prepared by the concerning department and same were sent to Centre Government for its approval but it did not release funds till date," they informed. They further said that work on the feasibility report was also completed even more than a year ago and the funds allocated for conducting survey on preparing feasibility report has been spent yet the projects worth crores of rupees are hanging in balance. "Half of the current financial year has passed but the Centre has not released funds for the proposed tunnels which are of much significance in terms of development particularly Mughal Road Tunnel to provide all weather road connectivity plan for the State which would open up all the regions of State to improve economic opportunities and access to health and educational facilities," they said. Informed sources told that the holding of funds by Center Government for the proposed tunnels was the result of its displeasure for State Government's tendency to not execute sanctioned projects within stipulated time period. The main purpose was the inter-regional connectivity in the State. The construction of Mughal Road had begun this process but it needed to be taken to next level by constructing a tunnel on this vital link between two regions of the State to make it an all weather facility, they added. |
