| LC adjourned over VK Singh's revelations | | | Mustansir SRINAGAR, Oct 1: The Chairman Legislative Council Amrit Malhotra today adjourned the upper house first for half an hour and later for the whole day after the members of the principal opposition party PDP and Syed Rafeeq Shah of National Panthers Party demanded a special discussion on the revelations of the former Army Chief, General V.K. Singh under rule 200 of the conduct of business. The Chairman disallowed their adjournment motion. Opposition parties demanded that the issue was a matter of urgent public importance as the revelations were an attack on the "democratic institution of the State". After a heated discussion on the issue the PDP lawmakers staged walk out after which the chairman adjourned the House first for half an hour and later for the entire day. As the Council met for the second meeting of the session, opposition members including PDP and Panthers Party were on their feet seeking discussion on the General V.K. Singh's revelations and the latest civilian killings. The Chairman, however, refused to allow the motion. "I want to know my status. Am I the agent of the IB, the RAW or the Army," Naeem Akhter, the PDP lawmaker asked amid the din. "The revelations have pointed fingers towards this House." After the Opposition refused to let the Question Hour proceed, National Conference leaders from the treasury benches including Davender Rana and Ali M. Sagar asked the Chairman to allow the motion if the opposition was insisting. However, as it seemed that the Chairman could permit a debate, PDP lawmaker, Mohd Ashraf Mir, stood up and said that, "entire house has been hijacked by few persons and we are not given any respect". With this the PDP lawmakers walked out of the House and the Chairman adjourned the House for half an hour. After half an hour when the House met again, the PDP lawmakers maintained and protested over what they called the "hijacking of the house". After this the Chairman adjourned the House for the whole day |
