| JK fails to tap potential of 24000 MW, generates only 759 MW | | Electricity purchase bill Rs 4000 Crore | | Akshay Azad JAMMU, Oct 1: The inability of State Government to tap vast hydro power potential of 24000 MW, coupled with increasing demand of electricity has been resulting in siphoning of huge financial resources of cash starved State, on power purchase bill which has reached to around Rs. 4000 Crores. Sources informed Early Times that State Government has spent Rs. 3955.58 cr on power purchase for the last financial year 2012-13, which was Rs. 246.55 Crore higher than the power purchase bill of financial year 2011-12, of Rs. 3740 cr. They further said that during the last financial year the power demand of State was 2600 MW during winter and 2450 MW during summer. "After power curtailments the demand during 2012-13 was 1900 MW during winter and 1712 during summer", sources said. Showing a huge deficit in demand and supply, sources said, against the demand, the State was able to supply only 1000-1800 MW of electricity during summer and 870-1500 MW during winter. "The deficit is mainly due to the low power generation in the State sector. The total hydro potential of State is around 25000 MWs but the State was able to generate only 759 MWs of electricity from the State-run power projects and the remaining power has to be purchased by the State Government", sources said. Sources further divulged that there was slight reduction of Rs. 45 Crores in power deficit from Rs 2530 Crore to Rs 2485 Crore during the last fiscal. "The power collection in 2012-13 was at Rs 1415.64 Crore as compared to Rs 1014.56 Crore in 2011-12 (an increase of Rs 301.08 Crores), while the power collection target was raised to Rs 2500 Crore in 2013-14", they said. The Government has projected electricity demand of around 4600 MW for the State by 2021-22 before the Planning Commission of India. |
