| Mehbooba labels Omar as weak Chief Minister, accuses him of taking dictation from New Delhi | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Oct 1: Accusing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of being too weak to act against the police or security forces personnel involved in human rights violations in the State, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President and leader of opposition in Assembly, Mehbooba Mufti today said that Omar should demit his office if he feels helpless in carrying out the daily obligations as the head of State. Initiating discussion over the adjournment motion moved by PDP over the recent killings in State, Mehbooba said the institution of Chief Minister has been undermined by Omar since he has failed to deliver goods as the head of State. She said people have lost faith in mainstream politicians and it is time for them to improve their performance. "People have faith and trust in the system that their grievances would be addressed who are at the helm of affairs. If the Chief Minister feels helpless then he has no right to be in power and he should say good-bye to the chair. Instead of taking dictation from New Delhi the State Government should take decisions on their own so that people believe there is State Government in place," said Mehbooba. Taking at dig at police for issuing conflicting statements on Shopian incidents, the leader of opposition said that it took 12 days for police to file an FIR in the case. She said that three persons were dubbed as civilians in the first instance and later on police said that two among them were relatives of militants while as the third one was booked for stone pelting. "The Shopian residents are fully aware about the events that unfolded on that day but are unwilling to depose since they fear that they might be victimized. The conflicting statements issued by the police provided a chance to CRPF to justify their firing. The curfew imposed by authorities in Shopian was lifted after 15 days and this gives an impression that we are residents of a colony," said Mehbooba. CPI (M) leader and MLA Kulgam, Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami while taking part in the discussion said that if Chief Minister fails to take action against 'erring' security forces or police personnel then it justifies the wrong doings carried out by them. Tarigami said people feel insecure adding that accountability needs to be inculcated among the police and security forces personnel. "Since 1990 many probes have been ordered in unfortunate incidents and what has been the fate of such probes. How many people have been held accountable for their actions? The Government should not hesitate in arresting the security forces personnel who carried out firing on civilians in the Shopian incident. Demoralization has already set in among the ranks of people. We can still restore people's confidence if each killing of 2013 is made accountable. Desperation leads to terrorism and we can fight terrorism only after inculcating confidence among people," said Tarigami. Legislators Aga Syed Ruhullah, Mohammad Sharif Niaz, Engineer Abdul Rashid, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, Balwant Singh Mankotia and Hakim Mohammad Yasin also took part in the discussion. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah replied to the points while winding up the discussion on the adjournment motion. |
