Work on Ganpat bridge yet to resume
R&B Minister's assurance turns hollow

Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 7: Despite the assurance from Minister for Public Works Department, Abdul Majeed Wani, the work on Ganpat bridge in Doda has not resumed. The two pillars of the abandoned bridge on river Chenab in Doda are standing with some technical fault, which the PWD Minister said will be rectified but nothing has been done so far.
This bridge has great importance in Doda as it connects the district headquarter Doda with rest of the country. At present vehicles have to move through sharp curves starting from Pul-Doda to Paryote, which is very dangerous. Few years back Chief Minister Omar Abdullah passed through this road and scolded authorities but despite that nothing has been done.
The decision of constructing Ganpat bridge on river Chenab was taken during the tenure of former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's time and when the Jammu and Kashmir Project Construction Corporation (JKPCC) started work on the project, Dilip Thusoo was the Managing Director of the Corporation.
Sources said that Thusoo is responsible for the technical problem of the bridge and he faced some corruption charges. But no action was taken against him and he still enjoys patronage of the Government. Presently he is working as Secretary Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council.
Now, when Wani took over the charge of PWD department, people of Doda had hoped that some action may be taken and work on the bridge may be completed. Wani even responded by issuing a statement that work on the bridge will be re-started.
But so far he seems to be in deep slumber and the Ganpat Bridge is as it is.
This bridge is vital link for more than 2 lakh people living on the northern side of river Chenab in Doda but it also give an easier road link to rest of twin districts of Doda and Kishtwar which covers around 4 lakh people.
