| Jammu likely to get its fist IHM soon | | | Siddharth Sadralia Jammu, Oct 7: The much desired first Institute for Hotel Management in Jammu region that was envisaged some five years ago under the regime of Jammu University Vice Chancellor Varun Sahni still waits in pipeline, pending the release of the funds from the Tourism Ministry of India for its finality. Though the legal formalities of acquiring 450 kanals of the land in the picturesque locales of Patnitop have been ensured by the State Government, the process is holding up since long due to want of release of the funds to complete the Institute. The proposed institute that earlier was scheduled to offer Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) (Hotel Management) to the students now has included two more faculties. These will be courses to be conducted on adventurous sports besides opening of school for engineering and vocational studies as informed by Dr Prakash Antahal, Director Project who is the key resource person managing the affairs of the institute . He said that the project has not been shelved as had been rumored of late, and the process is waiting for the release of the funds. "So far we have been sanctioned Rs 2 crore from University Grants Commission, out of which Rs one crore was available which was utilized in making the approach road as well as some residential purposes," said Dr Prakash. He said that Centre for extension and outreach programme will also be one of the important features of the Institute that would cater to the holistic development of the students engaged in various faculty programmes. "We took the possession of the land in February last year through a Cabinet order and hopefully would be coming up with the institute this year," said Dr Prakash Antahal. The institute as per its last submitted report was to be built at the cost of Rs 12 crores. The institute will cater to the needs of growing hospitality professionals in Jammu and Kashmir, as tourism industry is likely to emerge as major industry in the State, which hold immense employment opportunities. The ambitious project is a part of the expansion plan to create trained manpower for the tourism sector as it has emerged as important employment industry. Every year lakhs of tourists including pilgrims visit Jammu and Kashmir, but due to lack of professionally managed services including the hotel industry, most of the visitors sometimes leave with bitter memories and Government want to bring in more managers to make tourism more professional. So far the State has only one functional Hotel Management Institute in Kashmir valley which is not enough to cater to the needs of whole State. |
