| Domestic violence on rise in Jammu, 379 cases registered till May 2013 | | Domestic violence Act not implemented upto mark | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 7: The cases of domestic violence are on rise in Jammu as 379 complaints till May 2013 have been lodged in the women cell so far this year as compared to last year cases i.e. 368 till May mid. Police figures show a slight increase in domestic violence cases, mostly relating to matrimonial disputes and family squabbles. Harassment for dowry too adds fuel to the fire. "Till May 2013, the women cell of J&K Police, Jammu has received 379 complaints, out of which 191 cases have been compromised, 16 FIRs have been lodged while 173 cases are still pending," official sources said. They said, "last year, the women cell received a total of 924 complaints, out of which 883 were solved with the consent of both the parties while 36 FIRs were registered and the other cases are still in progress." "As compared, this year till May mid, 379 complaints have been lodged whereas the figure till the last year May ending was 368, which shows a slight increase in the graph for domestic violence," they further added. Sources said further in 2011, 1070 complaints were received by women cell out of which 1034 cases were solved, 32 FIRs were registered and the others are still under progress. "Women's boldness is often mistaken for arrogance and this according to many is justifiable in her getting beaten up by their spouses. While some find courage to speak up or walk out, there are others still bound by family pressures and keep the matter within the four walls of the house," said official of women cell Jammu. "Divorce is the ultimate option for me as my husband beats me every day after coming home and also doesn't give me any money for day to day expenses as I m not a working lady and I am now really frustrated and want to get over with this not so good marriage," said a victim on condition of anonymity. "Priority is to settle the dispute peacefully between family rather than punishing the people as we also don't want that due to this divorces should happen. We want families to get together," a police official said adding that people are being made aware especially the women through counseling about legal aspects that can guard or safeguard them. The Domestic Violence Act was introduced and implemented in India in 2005. The act covers the physical, psychological and sexual violence committed on women adding physical injuries, verbal abuse, harassment and even threatening of women. As in earlier cases the women cell was only allowed to register the case without any appropriate action but now under the act any domestic violence particularly harassment committed on women will be highly punishable. Under sub section 498 minimum 3 years of imprisonment would be awarded to the culprit. The act came into force in J&K on July 12, 2011 but has not been fully implemented to curb crimes against women which gets clear from the growing domestic violence cases in the city. |
