Old horses losing ground, freshers emerging stronger in Uri
10/11/2013 11:24:24 PM

Mustansir
SRINAGAR, Oct 11: With the arch rivals NC and Congress loosing foothold in Uri constituency, the individuals seem to be game-changers under the given scenario.
The high profile Uri constituency is likely to throw surprises in the 2014 big battle as both Mohd. Shafi who represented the constituency from 1977-2002 and Taj Mohi-ud-Din who currently represents the constituency are losing the ground fast for the reason that Mohd. Shafi Uri is out of the picture and Taj Mohi-ud-Din is facing anti-incumbency to the optimum. And the interesting part of the story is that the retired IPS officer turned politician Raja Aijaz is carrying the day although opposition PDP is also making inroads in this strategically sensitive constituency.
According to sources, the health and age of NC stalwart, Mohd. Shafi Uri, currently a Rajya Sabha member may not permit him to contest and his son who is a doctor is likely to contest from Uri. On the other hand Taj is facing strong anti-incumbency factor as is evident from the fact that Taj, despite his all-out efforts has been unable to pull even a double digit number in some places during his recent visits to the constituency.
However, Raja Aijaz who according to sources has backing of some senior Congress leaders both in New Delhi and Srinagar is carrying the day. An interesting equation is thus coming to fore in the Uri suggesting that until recent past community politics was playing the significant role but now the division between the communities and the people are looking beyond the community politics and in such a situation both Uri and Taj, who have been the beneficiaries of the community politics seem to be the losers while Rajas famously known as Bamba Qureshis and Aitimal Qureshis and also the Khwajas divided in castes like Khan, Sheikh, Mir, Mughal, Khan, Sayeed etc. who used to be at loggerheads with one another have started looking beyond community and caste politics and both Raja Aijaz and PDP have somehow played a vital role in forging some kind of unity bond between castes and communities.
If sources are to be believed some senior Congress leaders at Centre have been supporting induction of Raja Aijaz in the Congress party and project him as the future candidate from the Uri. Though Raja has acquaintances with NC president Dr. Farooq Abdullah but chances of him joining the NC are remote. The observers, however, believe that it is premature as yet to have some final analysis on the political equations in Uri but maintain that re-alignment is inevitable in that strategically sensitive constituency.
