| One soldier killed as security forces foil yet another infiltration bid in Kupwara | | Police cop sustains minor injuries in Sanat Nagar area | | Jehangir Rashid
SRINAGAR, Oct 11: One Army soldier lost his life while taking part in an anti-filtration operation in the frontier district of Kupwara in North Kashmir during the preceding night. The militants who wanted to infiltrate were forced to retreat following firing from this side of Line of Control.
Meanwhile, a police cop was injured when the rifle of his colleague went off inside a shop in the Sanat Nagar area of summer capital in the late afternoon. The firing led to panic in the area forcing the shopkeepers to down their shutters. Traffic in the area also got halted for some time due to the firing incident.
A Defence spokesman said alert troops on the Line of Control thwarted an infiltration bid being made from across the border in the frontier district of Kupwara. The advancing militants were forced to go back to Pakistan after failing to sneak in, the spokesman said.
The spokesman said that one Army soldier lost his life during the operation that took place during the preceding night. He said the jawan sustained serious injuries in the firing of militants and succumbed to his injuries later on.
"An infiltration bid was foiled during the intervening night of October 10 and 11 in the Kachhal area of frontier Kupwara Division by the alert Army troops deployed along the Line of Control. However, during the exchange of fire between the Army personnel and the militants attempting infiltration, a soldier was injured who later succumbed to the injuries," said the Defence spokesman.
It would be in place to mention here that Army had on October 8 called off its operation in the Keran sector of Kupwara after killing eight militants during the operation that carried on for almost two weeks. Keran sector has been in news many times during this year as militants from across the border made many attempts to sneak into this side from the other side of the border.
Meanwhile, a police cop sustained minor injuries after he was hit by a bullet that accidentally came off the rifle of his colleague while they were inside a shop in the Sanat Nagar area. People in Sanat Nagar after hearing the firing shot got panicky and terrified while as the shopkeepers closed down their shops.
Reports said that some police cops posted for the security of People’s Conference leader, Sajad Gani Lone had an altercation with a shopkeeper in the Sanat Nagar. During the melee gun of one of the cops went off accidentally causing minor injuries to yet another police cop. The condition of injured police cop is said to be out of danger.
In the meantime, police today claimed that alert police guard thwarted an attempt by militants to attack a police picket set up for security of minority community in South Kashmir's Pulwama district. A police spokesman said that unknown militants attempted to attack a police guard deployed for protection of minority community at village Koil in Pulwama district.
"The alert sentry on duty noticed some suspicious movement near the minority guard picket and fired some rounds. However, the militants managed to escape leaving behind a rifle on the spot. Police has launched search operation in the area and investigation has been taken up," said the police spokesman. |
