Adopt tit for tat policy against Pakistan on LOC, IB
10/19/2013 11:58:00 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu,Oct 19: When union Home Minister, S.K.Shinde,visits Jammu after a day or so its is expected that he would visit some border areas for assessing the problems being faced by people living in the villages that touches the LOC and the IB in the state owing to repeated ceasefire violations being committed by Pakistani troops.
Well as far as the security situation on the border is concerned it can be assessed by the Defence Minister and the top Army and the BSF authorities.Though the border scene in some sectors in Jammu is not as bad as it was in 1999 when over two lakh people, living in villages close to the LOC and the IB,especially in Akhnoor sector, were forced to flee to safer places when their houses too were targeted by the Pak gunners,it may assume alarming dimensions if remedial measures were not taken in hand.
It is for Shinde to find out whether there was scope for deploying additional companies of paramilitary forces on the IB in the Jammu sector for countering any mischief from the other side of the border. If not anything else Shinde could review the security scenario in the context of earlier plan on rehabilitating those families that lived within the firing range of the Pak gunners at safer places for which they were to be allotted plots of land and some monetary help for constructing small dwellings.
Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, has said that the Government of India needs to take up strongly the issue of repeated ceasefire violations by Pak troops with Islamabad. What does "strongly" mean only Omar Abdullah knows it ? And it will be better for him to explain to Shinde what he actually meant by strongly.
Does he want New Delhi to abuse Islamabad and threaten of dire consequences if ceasefire violations were not stopped ? If he means so he needs to know that verbal threats hardly create any scare among those who matter in Pakistan. This leaves war as the only way open for silencing Pak guns. But war is not an option and that too when India has to face Assembly elections in five states and the Lok Sabha election next year. War is not the option because of new political, military and diplomatic equations Pakistan has developed with a number of countries, specially China.
Yes,Omar Abdullah is right when he says that ceasefire has been vital part of the peace process. He has called upon the Centre to take up the issue with Pakistan in a "strong manner" as it was getting "more serious" now."I do not understand who is behind this and what do they think because recently our Prime Minister met Pakistan Prime Minister in New York and they talked about ceasefire violations. It was decided that the DGMOs of both countries will discuss the issue and find a remedy. Instead of a solution to it, the issue is getting more serious," he has said.
"The way civilian areas were targeted by shelling in which a few children were injured, it does not seem that their intentions are good. I would request the government of India to take up the issue with the government of Pakistan in a strong manner," Mr. Omar has stated.
In fact the very attitude of Pakistan is ambiguous because Islamabad,on one hand, has been making a strong plea for the resumption of talks but on the other hand taking no steps for stopping ceasefire violations and ingress bids by militants. It seems that Islamabad,by now,has understood that India is a soft state with a number of internal problems.
And if one gives weightage to Omar's statement India needs to revise its policy towards Pakistan.Since war is not an option it has to follow the principle of tit for tat.Every one fire from Pak troops need to be retaliated by 10 rounds of fire. One mortar fire to be replied by heavy fire from long range guns.Alongwith this New Delhi needs to tone up all its diplomatic channels so that Islamabad comes under pressure from some developed nations which could halt repeated ceasefire violations.
