| Encroachment on Govt land: No action taken against land grabbers | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 8: Despite running an anti encroachment campaign against land grabbers the state government has failed to initiate action against notorious land grabbers who made a desperate attempt on Friday to encroach upon several hundred kanals of prime land in Narwal Pian area of Satwari. According to official sources, a group of land grabbers on Friday forcefully tried to encroach prime Irrigation Department land under Khasra No 154/183/184/179 in Narwal Pian area of Satwari in Ashok Nagar. The labourers and contractor present on ground zero were allegedly manhandled by the land grabbers and destroyed construction material worth several lakhs in the ensuing scuffle on the spot. According to official sources,a group of land grabbers made a desperate attempt to encroach the irrigation department land and allegedly manhandled contractor present on the spot and his work force on Friday, December 6,2013". In the absence of timely police action the officials and contractor engaged by the Irrigation department to construct the store room of the department could not do much and reported the matter to the nearby police station and their higher authorities. The land grabbers along with few locals claimed that the land originally belonged to them and must be handed over the possession of the land at the earliest. Their claims were, however, questioned by the contractor and officials of the Irrigation department. On Saturday when the district authorities led by Additional DC Kalyan Singh along with officials of the Revenue department visited the site they rubbished claims of the land grabbers that the area was being encroached by the Irrigation department. According to official sources, after verifying the revenue records, the revenue authorities clarified that the piece of land under question originally belonged to Irrigation department and as per the records the department is in the possession of the land since 1905.The revenue authorities also acknowledged existence of a store room of Irrigation department since 1947. Ironically, despite lodging separate FIRs by the contractor and the state Irrigation department the police has failed to take action against the guilty land grabbers. The police, claimed officials of the Irrigation department has identified the land grabbers but is shying away from taking any action under duress. (JKNI) |
