Omar spits on Akbar Lone's DO's, grants extension to VC Hamal

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 8: Breaking the tradition and propriety of making it public, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in his capacity as Chancellor, has arbitrarily granted extension of two years to the term of Irshad Ahmad Hamal as Vice Chancellor of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri.
Top level bureaucratic sources disclosed to Early Times that Chief Minister silently dashed off a communication to the BGSB University VC that his term, which was close to it's end on completion of three years, had been extended by two more years. Significantly the decision was taken after the Minister of Higher Education Mohammad Akbar Lone wrote two demi-official letters to the Chief Minister requesting him that search committees be constituted to find new VCs for BGSB University and Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) Awantipora.
While as the term of Irshad Ahmad Hamal was scheduled to end in the current month, Dr Abdul Rashid Trag would have retired early next year. Sources said that Chief Minister did not bother even to respond to his Cabinet colleague. Without going by the suggestion of the Minister for Higher Education, Chief Minister decided to grant extension to Hamal. In another significant development, according to these well placed sources, Omar Abdullah also began the process of constituting a search committee which would be secretly given the task of appointing Prof Mushtaq Peer as the VC of IUST Awantipora.
However, for Dr Trag's good luck and Prof Peer's bad luck, Crime Branch, under tremendous pressure in a PIL from J&K High Court brought the former Chairman of Board of Professional Entrance Examinations under it's dragnet in the infamous MBBS selection scam of 2012. As the panic button was pressed, Government lost no time to terminate the engagement of Prof Peer as "Consultant for fast track class IV recruitment" on November 14.
In the dramatically changing scenario, Chief Minister has now reportedly decided to extend Dr Trag's term by two years so as to construct an element of analogy and justify the extension already granted to Mr Hamal. On the advice of men in Chief Minister's Secretariat, Omar Abdullah is reportedly holding the belief that the allegation of corruption and maladministration against Mr Hamal and an unrest on the campus were the "sinister creation" of a couple of newspaper editors in Srinagar and Jammu who "attempted to blackmail the VC for not obliging them with massive advertisements".
Akbar Lone, who had the weakness of being the owner or partner of three private B Ed colleges and pushing an academic mafia's proposal of granting recognition to 50 new colleges for dubious reasons, was infact subjected to another mental torture. Lone had been strongly resisting Chief Secretary Iqbal Khanday's move to shift Mushtaq Ahmad Sheikh as Secretary of General Administration Department. Chief Minister decided to oblige the Chief Secretary with the appointment of Mohammad Ashraf Bukhari as the Secretary GAD and at the same time pushed Mushtaq Sheikh to Lone's own Department of Higher Education. Lone was Sheikh's supporter in GAD but was keen to retain Gazanfar Hussain as Commissioner Secretary of Higher Education.
