| Can BJP ride on Modi's back in J&K? | | | Abodh Sharma
Jammu, Dec 8: Results of the Assembly elections in four states that were declared today would definitely have raised hackles of the state BJP in J&K, but would the party be able to ride on the crest of Narendra Modi's wave to repeat its 2008 tally would be interesting to see. A near complete safronization of the four states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhatisgarh and Delhi has enthused a sense of rejuvenation and invigoration in the state of the BJP in J&K, which got unprecedented 11 seats in the State Legislative Assembly in 2008, but it was reduced to mere four member party after it expelled seven of its MLAs following cross voting fiasco in the elections to the Legislative Council. While Narendra Modi's Lalkar Rally was the best thing to have happened to the party's rank and file since then, party has started fencing its chances in both Assembly as well as Parliamentary elections that are due in few months from now. Party has also been enthused by the huge anti Congress wave across the country that has decimated it in the four states. The election breeze has already started blowing across the state with both National Conference and PDP, the principal regional parties in J&K declaring their candidates for the Parliamentary elections. The picture became more or less complete with the statement of the Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad ruling himself out as the candidate from Udhampur -Doda constituency and reiterating that Lal Singh shall seek re- election from the seat. Congress is also likely to repeat Madan Lal from Jammu-Poonch seat. A motivated BJP in the meanwhile is facing a problem of plenty for the two seats of Jammu region as party is fancying its chances on both the seats in the backdrop of an anti Congress sentiment. Sources in the BJP suggest that while Dr. Jatinder Singh, member of the National Executive and national spokesman of the party, Shamsher Singh Manhas and Dr. Nirmal Singh, both former presidents have been staking their claims from the Kathua-Udhampur-Doda seat, sitting MLAs Ashok Khajuria and Jugal Kishore Sharma besides CA Satpal Sharma and Chanderprakash Ganga have been staking claims for party mandate for Jammu-Poonch Seat. "There have been no deliberations on the issue as yet as the leadership was busy in the elections to the four states," said an office bearer of the state unit. With Parliamentary elections likely in March-April 2014 and Assembly elections getting due a few months later, there is a likelihood of both the elections being held simultaneously - a preposition that BJP would be weighing more advantageous in the current political scenario. |
