| Hold simultaneous polls for Parliament, Assembly in J&K: Harsh to ECI | | 'Special status to state conferred upon for benefit of public but not for politicians' | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 18 : Harsh Dev Singh National Panther Party (NPP) Chairman has urged upon the Election Commission of India (ECI) to hold simultaneous polls for Parliament and Assembly Elections in the State of J&K. He said that elections for both parliament and assembly are due in the current year and holding them separately would put a huge financial burden on the public exchequer. He said that a state like J&K with its meager resources would suffer immensely on the developmental front in the event of separate polls for Parliament and Assembly. He said that the state was dependent for all its developmental needs on centre and under such circumstances the utilization of almost entire central assistance on elections defied logic and rationale and would further be opposed to public interest. "Even otherwise the developmental initiative would be adversely affected in case of separate polls as most of the year would be consumed by model code of conduct, he added. He said that the coalition government having already completed five year's term, it should itself make a recommendation for holding simultaneous polls for both elections. Harsh Dev Singh further stated that it was politically and morally incorrect to have six-year duration for the J&K Assembly in the name of special status when all other states of the country had a five year term. He said that special status was conferred upon the state for the benefit of the public of the state but was being abused by the political class to enjoy a longer term in office. He said that NPP had even moved a bill for reduction in the duration of Assembly which was unceremoniously rejected by the ruling coalition. NPP leader further said that it was highly unjust and preposterous to have a six year term for Assembly when all other democratic institutions in the state had a five year term. He regretted that the same legislature had prescribed a six year term for itself which was highly illogical, unjustified and discriminatory. It was further indicative of double standards on the part of ruling class, he observed. Citing five year term as sufficient to gauge the performance of the govt., he urged for holding simultaneous polls for both parliament and Assembly |
