Bitter exchange of words witnessed after formal meeting
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 18: As Congress continues to be in dilemma over forging pre poll alliance with its ally National Conference in J&K, sharp differences were witnessed between the functionaries and leaders from two regions Kashmir and Jammu over the issue during interaction with party Vice president Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi today with rank and file of the party from Kashmir opposing any such move contrary to what some senior leaders suggested that it had become imperative in the present political situation in state. Expression of opinion on the crucial issue is said to have led to bitter exchange of words between some leaders later outside the meeting hall.
A day after marathon AICC session at Talkatora stadium on Friday, Rahul Gandhi, sources said had called meeting of all state units and the key functionaries on board to take an assessment afresh of the situation of party in the states. Sources said when the turn of J&K PCC and some senior leaders from the state came, all did not go well as it was almost a vertical split on the issue of pre poll alliance with NC between the leaders. While some district presidents from Kashmir and key functionaries of PCC asserted in explicit terms that any move to have alliance with NC would prove counterproductive and on this premise opposed tooth and nail the idea contending also that it would only benefit NC, some senior leaders and one MP was quite vocal on the contrary lines, sources said.
Sources further said the Jammu based leaders and the MP in particular speaking on the contrary lines contended that the prevailing political situation will not help Congress to go it alone nor would it fetch any huge gains for the party in terms of winning as many seats in the Assembly elections. The argument was on put in reference to early statements of JK leadership of the party that Congress would emerge as single largest party in the state. The MP , sources said also contended that in the post election scenario it would be imperative for Congress to have coalition with any party to form the government . It was for the High Command to see and decide that but it has become a necessary evil for the party to forge alliance be it with "A" or " B" party, the MP is said to have asserted , while giving his suggestion in front of Rahul Gandhi who had sought the suggestions on this issue . Sources said later when the leaders dispersed, outside the hall war of words was exchanged that led to heated arguments between some functionaries and even top leadership of the state. The meeting was held at 24 Akbar Road in New Delhi.
