SRINAGAR, Jan 18: Panic gripped some localities in the Hyderpora area of summer capital this morning after few gun shots were heard in the area. Meanwhile, apple rich town of Sopore in North Kashmir was rocked by a mysterious blast; however there were no casualties in both the incidents.
This morning people in localities of Hyderpora area got perturbed after hearing some gun shots near the bye-pass that connects Srinagar with North Kashmir and Central Kashmir via the Srinagar-Baramulla highway. The gun shots were heard near the Jamkash Vehicleades that last year saw one of the deadliest encounters between militants and security forces.
As soon as the gun shots were heard the security forces personnel stationed on the highway took position in order to give a reply to the gun shots that sources said were fired by some unidentified militants. The firing incident led to disruption in the traffic movement in the area and the security forces personnel carried out brief searches in the area.
People who were passing through the area at the time of firing incident immediately ran and took cover while sensing any eventuality in the aftermath of firing incident. However, no casualties took place and sources said the unidentified militants who carried out the firing fled from the spot. The situation turned normal after some time with both the pedestrian and traffic movement getting restored.
Some of the reports suggested that unidentified militants who fired the shots fled in the car from the site of the shoot-out. The situation is also not clear vis-a-vis the target of unidentified militants. Last year militants struck on June 24 in the same area and killed 10 army personnel a day before the arrival of Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh to Kashmir valley.
Meanwhile, a loud blast occurred at the main market in Sopore area of North Kashmir's Baramulla district in the morning. The blast took place outside the State Bank of India and people passing through the area immediately ran for safety. While people said that it was a grenade blast, police and security forces officials remained clueless about the incident.
A police official said that investigations have been launched in the case and true picture would emerge only when the probe is completed. The police official said that the probe would spell out whether the blast was due to the grenade or some other thing. No casualties were reported in this incident as well and the situation turned normal after some time.
