Bivek Mathur
Jammu, Jan 19: Even as the human rights watchdog in Jammu Kashmir loses its credibiity, the Chief Minister's search for a competent chairman for the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has not ended. Immediately after taking over the Chief Minister of the state, assured on the floor of the house in his first budget speech that the way Justice Ali Mohammad Mir had left the commission will not be repeated in the future but Justice (Retd) Bashir-Ud-Din also retired in October 2011 and the SHRC continues to be headless. The commission has become a toothless tiger as with 'no Chairman' it is also working with just two members namely Sardar Amolak Singh in Divisional Bench Jammu and Rafiq Fida Hussain in Divisional bench Srinagar and both are working day and night to safeguard the human rights violations in the state. Law Department, Jammu and Kashmir through the SHRC website has said that filling of vacant positions of the members in the commission is under active consideration of the government but if sources are to be believed, NC-Congress coalition is divided over the opinion to appoint the Chairperson as well as members of the commission as both wants their favourite members adjusted there. At an average, both the members have to face 50 plus case both in Divisional bench Jammu and Srinagar and for some cases, members have to travel trans-locations with flight charges, which state exchequer is bearing without appointing the coveted posts of members to ease out the process. |
