udhampur, Jan 18: A one day workshop on "Latest Trends in Biotechnology" was organized by Department of Biotechnology of Govt. Degree College Udhampur today in the college conference hall. According to press release, sponsored jointly by Dept. of Science and Technology and Star College Scheme of DBT, Govt. of India the workshop was attended by 125 teachers and students. Nodal Principal of Jammu region Prof. Nutan Kumar Resutra was the chief guest whereas Prof. S.S Bhalwal, Principal of the host college presided over the inaugural session. Reiterating his commitment for enhancing the excellence of this institution, Dr. Resutra lauded the efforts of the college for organizing this workshop. "Such platforms are of immense importance in a student's life as exposure to the latest and emerging knowledge in their subjects opens vistas of opportunities. Biotechnology, an interdisciplinary branch of sciences has been proving significant in exploring new areas that were untouched till today. It is important that students catch the spirit of objectives behind this workshop, "he added. Prof. S.S Bhalwal, in his presidential remarks he said that many more such programmes need to be planned and opportunities be provided to the students. He further announced that shortly an independent building of Biotechnology Dept. will be ready and the Dept. can organize such programmes more frequently. "I am greatly delighted to find experts from all the neighboring universities to interact with the students. The keynote speaker has very skillfully outlined various issues that need to be explored and students can play a very leading role in this connection," he added. Prof. Yash Paul Sharma, Professor of Botany, Jammu University was the key note speaker. In his presentation on "Fungi, Mushrooms and Food Security" he discussed various wonders that fungi has been performing to help the human world. "The latest research on mushrooms indicates that shortly we will be towards non- green revolution," he added. In the first technical session, Dr. Bijinder Bajaj, from school of Biotechnology, Jammu University delivered an invited talk on Micribial Biotechnology, Dr. Narendra Bairwa from school of Biotechnology SMVDU, Katra delivered an invited talk on Biotechnology: Public health and Modal Organism and Dr. Manmohan Sharma from Division of Biotechnology SKUAST, Jammu delivered an invited talk on Transgenic Plants: Generation Technology, Analysis and Risk Assessment. In the second technical session, the students were divided in various groups to perform practical under the mentorship of the experts. |
