| Leading garments stores booked by LMD | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 21: Acting on the complaints of consumers of being cheated, the officers of department of Legal Metrology conducted detailed inspection of number of leading garments stores at Gandhi Nagar area. According to Manoj Prabhakar, Deputy Controller Consumer Protection, to attract the consumers the various stores were offering attractive sales offers up to 50% on garments. The grievance of the consumers were that they were offered 40% discounts on MRP but in fact they were overcharged in the name of VAT thereby not getting actual percentage of the discount offered. On inspection of KAPSON store, it was found that the said dealer prominently offered 40 % discount on MRP marked on the Sweaters but was charging 5% additional VAT after deducting discounts thereby reducing the discounted price. According to Deputy Controller, MRP (Maximum Retail Price) on any product is a price which is inclusive of all taxes including VAT also & if the trader offers any discount on MRP, the reduced price also have the VAT component in it & any additional tax will automatically reduce the discount offered .In practicability the consumer is deceived by offering apparently 40% discount but in fact it is less. The store was booked under relevant provisions of law & was directed to charge the consumers as agreed upon in lucrative sales offers. In another case, one leading kid garment store was booked for not declaring mandatory declarations like address of the manufacturer, PKD & MRP on the clothes. The trader was using self made stickers of inflated MRP. On scrutinizing the bills, it was found that the purchase price was very less & the dealer inflated the MRP by 60 % & then offered 30% discounts to mislead the consumers on the pretext of Sale offer. The seizure was made & the dealer was booked.
