| Ladakhis up against their own MLAs, demand two more districts | | New administrative units | | Rustam JAMMU, Jan 21: Accusing Ghulam Nabi Azad-led coalition Government (Nov 2005-July 2008) of neglecting Ladakh and ignoring its legitimate demands, the Ladakh unit of the BJP on Monday demanded creation of more districts in the region. The accusation was well founded and the demand highly genuine considering the nature of terrain, size of the area and accessibility. Ladakh occupied more than 60 per cent of the state's land area and it remains cut off from rest of the world for months during winter. That accusation of the Ladakhis that the Congress-led coalition Government ignored their region in 2007 while taking decision on creation of eight more districts in the state could be seen from the fact that it not only subverted the Wazir Commission report on new administrative units but also accorded a very special treatment to Kashmir by establishing four more districts in the Valley overlooking the fact that the Kashmiri people had not demanded new districts. The State Government also created four new districts in Jammu province, though it deserved a minimum of nine more districts as its demand for creation of more districts was age-old and as it occupied area two time that of Kashmir region. Azad Government didn't set up even new district in Ladakh. "The criterion for creation of new districts is based on area and the population. We are at pains to note that our MLAs totally failed to impress upon the Government to create at least two new districts in the Ladakh region, one each for Leh and Kargil. The new districts are created to boost good governance in vast areas where the district administration cannot supervise the development works and control the employees effectively…It has come to their knowledge that the Cabinet Sub-Committee is considering new administrative units in the state and we strongly demand that the CSC should seriously consider creating at least two districts, one each for Leh and Kargil. Considering the huge area of Leh district with an area of 45000 sq km which is bigger than Himachal Pradesh area wise, Leh district deserves the creation of a new district," the BJP spokesperson said while taking on the local MLAs and justifying their demand for increasing the number districts from the existing two to four. It's time for Rigzin Jora, who is an important member of the CSC, to assert his position so that the people of his region get two more districts. |
