| Medicos leaving Govt jobs in J&K, joining top hospitals outside | | Yes, you did it! | | Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, Jan 21: Government employment in medical education department is seemingly no more an enticing option for MBBS and higher qualified professionals of Jammu and Kashmir. They are leaving not to return. Several have left the jobs and many more are looking for lucrative options outside the state. Ask for the reason and medicos, who are still serving in Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu but have their eyes set on some opening either in any part of India or outside the country, maintain that physical threats, low salaries coupled with brute violation of rules and regulations have created a fear psychosis among them about their future prospects. Young MBBS and MDs, who talked to Early Times, maintained that Government has turned the medical college into another rehabilitation centre where onus is not on efficiency and quality. Several young and talented professionals have left the Medical College just because they fear they would be lost in the din if they continued to operate under tiring and unprofessional atmosphere. Goons with political backing hurl abuses at the doctors, be they male or female and the police as well as CRPF, both of whom have been entrusted with the task of keeping the emergency safe for doctors do nothing and keeping watching as mute spectators till the time the situation does not take a serious turn. The Minister promises much on routine basis but does nothing, medicos complain. Referring to Dr. Yogesh Manhas of Anaesthesia, Dr. Amit Suri of Surgery, Dr. Amit Bhushan of Medicine, Dr. Nitin Vermani of Radiology, Dr. Rohit Sharma of Radiology, Dr. Wajahat of Microbiology, Dr. Javed of Neurosurgery, Dr. Sunil Gupta of Radiology and Dr. Siddharth Sharma of Orthopaedics, they maintain that these young doctors would have been assets for the state but none cared for them. They left for greener pastures and are now, brightest in their respective institutions, both within and outside the country. Making a mention of another reason, the medicos said that who would be interested in working for a Government which shuttles doctors and experts within months of their posting at one place. "Inside the medical college, you do know what work you would be assigned on the directions of some higher-up. You are forced to do even odd jobs just because you are a Government employee," added the medico. Calling these doctors their inspiration, they maintain that when your dignity and honour are both at stake, it is better to shift outside and earn a name for yourself. "The Ministers recently appointed three doctors in the teaching faculty. All the three belong to high profile and VVIP families. A top plastic surgeon was left out just because, the three VVIPs quota kids had to be accommodated," said a medico. He added that medicos have for the first time realised how difficult the political class has made the task for them. "They want to go for PPP mode. It is surprise. They are unable to pay us salaries that we deserve. I am unable to understand, how they would pay doctors whom they would be engaging from outside the state. Ruined super-speciality hospital is a glaring example how political class of Jammu and Kashmir does not apply mind when it comes to taking significant decisions," added another medico. He said "Government should privatise entire health and medical education department if it is unable to run it." |
