| Against required 30,000 MT, only 6000 MT rice stocked in Valley | | Ramzan grills FCI | | Mustansir Srinagar, Jan 21 : Shortage of food grains is likely to inconvenience people of Kashmir in the coming days if appropriate measures are not taken now. According to official sources against the requirement of 30,000 metric tons of rice for the month of February, only 6000 metric tons have been stocked so for by the Food Corporation of India. Sources said the Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution System, Choudhery Mohammad Ramzan Tuesday grilled the FCI authorities for not stocking the food grains well in time. They said Choudhery summoned the General Manager FCI Tuesday expressed his displeasure over insufficient stock of rice for the coming month. They said Choudhery had even apprised the Chief Minister about the situation. Sources further added that fearing a public outcry Choudhery today asked the GM FCI to send 300 trucks on daily basis to Srinagar only then the target of stocking 30,000 metric tons of rice could be achieved to do away with the shortfall and shortage of essential commodity. Sources said, the FCI, however, agreed to send 200 truckloads on daily basis to the Valley to ensure sufficient stock of the food grains for the coming month. They added that ahead of the budget session of the state legislature commencing from February10, Choudhery wants to make sufficient stock of essentials so that the issue is not raised in the legislature. Meanwhile the state government is seriously considering to windup the fair-price depots across the state introduced by the then government a decade ago with the objective to provide employment to educated unemployed youth and ensure hassle-free supply of essentials to the consumers at doorsteps. According to reliable sources the government has moved a proposal to windup the fair-price shops across the state following the reports of black marketing by the FP licensees. The said it will take a month or so to the government to take a final call on the issue. |
