| Cong not interested in ex Army chief's appearance before LC panel..... | | Gen VK Singh had come to Jammu on Jan 9.....? | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 21: Even as the 'stage' is set for appearance of former Army chief General VK Singh before privileges committee of Legislative Council tomorrow, uncertainty continues as to whether he would make his presence or not as sought by the panel which has summoned him to clarify his stand on remarks of J&K Ministers allegedly getting money from the Army. In case he doesn't appear before the panel tomorrow, it goes to advantage of Congress politically which is learnt to be not interested in ex Army chief to present himself in front of the LC panel. Genreal VK Singh has so far not responded in written nor confirmed about his appearance tomorrow. Sources said even though a meeting was held by the Privileges Committee under the chairmanship of Jugal Kishore Sharma, Congress legislator and former Minister, the party leadership is not interested nor willing to make the country's former Army chief appear , no matter a formal summon has been issued for the purpose with fresh date scheduled tomorrow, January 22. Sources said Congress is only doing so under the pressure of ally National Conference which too wants this happen as it would amount to gaining their points politically. Absence of two members from the meeting on Monday is also attributed to fact that Congress doesn't want to attach importance to this issue for the fear that this might be whipped up by opposition in Jammu much to their disadvantage, sources said adding that the party leadership is tactfully avoiding it . In the last meeting Congress members had even sought the matter to be closed and asked for revocation of summon orders against General VK Singh, apprehensive that it would have negative repercussions in Jammu for the party. Sources also said Chairman of the Privileges Committee is reported to have got phone calls from General VK Singh that he would appear before the panel and present his stand over the allegations he made last year. Sources also said that General VK Singh had come to Jammu last time, i.e. on January 9 before making halt at Pathankot on the previous night he reached for the purpose of appearing before the LC panel. However, Congress was not interested at that time also in General Singh coming up to Secretariat, sources said. What eventually led to General Singh not making his appearance is wrapped in layers of political mystery. As NC is in no mood to relent and succumb to what Congress wishes, it remains to be seen what happens tomorrow on both the situations-if General VK Singh would make appearance and if he again fails to do so. |
