Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 2: Curfew like restrictions were imposed on Sunday in most parts of Srinagar city, to prevent religious procession of Shiite Muslims on the eighth day of Muharram.
"Restrictions have been imposed in Maisuma, Kralkhud, Kothibagh, Ram Munshibagh, Shergarhi, Shaheedgunj, Karan Nagar and Batmaloo areas to maintain law and order in Srinagar," a senior police officer said.
Hundreds of policemen and paramilitary troopers of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in full riot-gears were deployed across curfew bound areas of the city including Lal Chowk to enforce restrictions. No vehicular movement will be allowed in the areas. Although, authorities said there is no restriction on movement during any emergency situation.
The government forces had laid coils of concertina and barricades to restrict movement of vehicular traffic and civilians.
Due to restrictions on vehicular movement, huge traffic jam was witnessed near Radio Kashmir crossing and Rambagh bridge.
Reports of youth pelting stones on security forces were received from many parts of the city.
In Lal Chowk area youth tried to break the curfew restrictions to take out processions, however, police and security forces deployed in the area foiled the attempts.
Though main procession is scheduled to be taken out on Tuesday (the 10th day of Muharram), Shiite Muslims in the region start taking out processions from the 8th day.
Since the beginning of separatist violence in Kashmir in the early 1990s, authorities have been disallowing Muharram processions in Srinagar to prevent miscreants from triggering sectarian clashes. Every year Shia Muslims in the month of Muharram (the first month of the Islamic calendar) across the world mourn the killing of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Mohammad. Hussein according to Islamic scholars achieved martyrdom in the Iraqi city of Karbala in the year 680.
