Jammu, Nov 2: Police might be patting its back for recovering the car of the former Minister that was stolen from outside his guarded house, within hours, but the incident has justified that State police is actually 'King's Police' that works for the political masters and has entirely different benchmarks when it comes to common people.
The urgency with which Police of Jammu and Samba districts reacted to the incident of theft of the car owned by former NC Minister SS Slathia is in complete departure to the kind of response that police offers when similar incident happens with a common man.
After recovering the stolen car and arresting the accused in less than 48 hours, a senior police officer proudly said, "We came to know that a Tata Safari has been stolen from the house of former Cabinet Minister and sitting Vijaypur MLA from his Trikuta Nagar residence, Police informed all mobile teams about the theft.
A police team intercepted the stolen vehicle on the Jammu -Pathankot highway and arrested the man who broke into the house of the former Minister to steal the vehicle.
The car lifter has been identified as Imam-ud-Din, hailing from Ratanpura in Moradabad area of Uttar Pradesh."
Police even went on to suspend their own guards deployed at former Minister's residence. "Kalyan Singh and Darshan Kumar -- who were on guard duty at the residence of the former Minister have been placed under suspension for dereliction of duty," the officer added.
While the recovery of the stolen car belonging to prominent politician of ruling party made by Police within hours indicates how effectively police can work to recover stolen cars, it is also indicative of the pathetic attitude of the police in similar situation involving a commoner.
"My car was stolen the previous week and for days I was harassed by the concerned I/C Police Post who not only treated me with arrogance and incivility, but even refused to give me an acknowledgement of my application that I gave him" said an employee of a private company. "It was only after the intervention of a senior officer that I was given the copy of FIR. They are reluctant to register cases so that they do not add on to their work load" he added.
With innumerable vehicle theft cases in the state unresolved for years and that involving a senior politician resolved within hours, serious question mark has been raised not only on the fairness of the Police towards the common people, but also on its integrity and probity in cases of vehicle thefts across the state.
