Mehbooba taunts Omar | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 3 : The October 31 decision of National Conference working president and Jammu & Kashmir Minister Omar Abdullah to abandon Ganderbal Assembly constituency and test political waters in new constituencies of Sonawar and Beerwah, as was expected, did not evoke positive reaction from his political opponents and many Kashmir-watchers. The BJP, the PDP and many a political commentator and Kashmir-watcher interpreted the decision in their own style. While commentators and Kashmir-watchers described the decision of Omar Abdullah to abandon the Ganderbal assembly constituency as a "political blunder", saying that "it would further lower the morale of the already frustrated NC cadres". This was a bad political decision taken when the "morale of the NC was already low". As for the BJP, it said that the NC accepted defeat even before filing nomination papers. It further said his decision to seek election from two new constituencies only demonstrates that he and his party have become politically irrelevant even in the Kashmir Valley they considered their stronghold. However, it was PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, who launched a blistering attack on Omar Abdullah and taunted and mocked him. "Didn't you see where the CM (Omar Abdullah) run away to contest elections today," she has in a sarcastic tone, adding that "had they worked for these six years he wouldn't have to run away from a constituency which was won by his grandfather and his father". The decision of Omar to quit Ganderbal 'clearly showed' that both Omar and his government have failed to deliver on the governance front. This government could neither do well in Ganderbal nor anywhere else…Just imagine he had to run away that too in two constituencies. If people of his own constituency would have been satisfied with his performance then he would have contested from Ganderbal and not opt other constituencies…" The most striking aspect of the whole situation that has developed in the Valley in the wake of Omar Abdullah's "mind-boggling" decision is that both the PDP and the BJP are hitting out at him and his NC and claiming that "contest this time in the state is between them and the NC is nowhere in the picture". Very interestingly, the Congress, which decided to go all alone in the election, has not said anything about the decision of Omar Abdullah. On the contrary, the Congress leaders like Sham Lal Sharma are attacking both the PDP and the BJP and accusing them of playing divisive politics. It appears there are elements within the Congress who are working behind the scene to bring about unity between the two parties so that they could play some role in the state politics after the elections. The Congress' attack on the PDP and the BJP and its silence over what Omar Abdullah did has surprised many considering the fact that both the parties were highly critical o each other till the other day. One thing appears certain: Both the upbeat PDP and the BJP would make the Omar's decision a big issue in the election. And why not? |
