Early Times Report

JAMMU, Nov 2: In a departure from normal political precedence in J&K, none of the major political parties has announced its Chief Ministerial candidate in the ensuing Assembly elections in the state.
It is a practice of sorts for the major political parties including National Conference (NC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Congress to project CM candidate in advance while going into hustings with a view to woo the voters through the most charismatic leader in their party.
If NC projected its patron Dr Farooq Abdullah in 2002 and 2008 Assembly polls as its prospective candidate for CM post, the PDP had its founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as the Chief Ministerial candidate on both the occasions while the Congress, which has a tradition of not projecting anybody ahead of elections, however, relied heavily on the mass appeal of its stalwart Ghulam Nabi Azad to position itself among voters.
Even though the state witnessed formation of coalition governments in 2002 as well as 2008 with different set of partners, there was no ambiguity on the names of Chief Ministerial candidates as in 2002, the PDP moved the name of Mufti Sayeed and ultimately he went on to occupy the CM chair for three years as per the agreement entered into with the Congress.
While in the latter half of the PDP-Congress regime, the senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad held the reigns as CM.
NC's veteran Dr Farooq Abdullah was his party's CM candidate in 2002 Assembly polls but despite getting maximum number of seats, the NC could not have the requisite numbers to form the government.
After the results of 2008 Assembly polls when again no party was able to get a clear majority, the NC stitched a coalition with the Congress to form a government in alliance but at the eleventh hour Dr Abdullah, who was once more a NC Chief Ministerial candidate, had a change of heart and handed over the job to his son Omar Abdullah.
Talking about the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), which has grown leaps and bounds in the last decade, was never a force to be reckon with since its inception in 1980 till the Assembly elections-2014, so the proposition of having a Chief Ministerial candidate from the saffron party never came up in public domain.
However, with its stupendous success in the last Lok Sabha elections where it led in as many as 26 Assembly segments of Jammu and 2 constituencies in Ladakh region, the BJP is also eyeing the CM's post with its much hyped goal of 'Mission 44+'.
But, the right wing party which always supported a CM from Jammu region is also refraining itself from naming a Chief Ministerial candidate presumably due to number game as the party first want to ensure sufficient numbers just as it did in Haryana and Maharashtra.
With a completely changed political scenario of the state, the NC, PDP, Congress and now the BJP, which has also made strong inroads in J&K, is not giving projection openly to any political figure in the upcoming elections seemingly because all of them want to play it safe rather wait and watch as in the event of a hung verdict it would be easier for these political groups to juggle around with different sets of permutations and combinations.
