J&K Election results: NC faces embarrassment after 3 decades | | | Muhammad Mukaram
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec: 23: After almost three decades, National Conference today found itself in an embarrassing situation as PDP registered its maiden win of five crucial seats out of eight in district Srinagar termed as the party's fortress in the state. Though three senior NC leaders Shamima Firdous, Ali Mohammad Sagar and Mubarak Gul managed to retain their seats, the party received a major jolt as its face and party president (outgoing chief minister) Omar Abdullah lost from Sonwar against rival party PDP's Mohammad Ashraf Mir. Omar was fighting from Sonwar constituency as well which he lost to PDP's Mohammad Ashraf Mir by a margin of 4783 votes. But he managed to win Beerwah by a margin of just 910 votes defeating Nazir Ahmad Khan of Indian National Congress. Out of a total electorate of around 77,505 in which 40481 were male voters and 37024 are female voters, 34,107 voters had exercised their right earlier on December 14. PDP candidate Ashraf Mir emerged a clear winner securing 14,283 votes, followed by the NC, party President bagging 9500 votes. Mufti Mohammad Sayeed-led PDP, which failed to win any seat in 2008 elections in Srinagar district, bagged Amira Kadal, Hazratbal, Zadibal, Sonawar and Batmaloo in the 2014 polls. However, NC managed to retain Idgah, Khanyar and Habba Kadal seats. Getting five seats in Srinagar district is PDP's major feat and a big jolt for National Conference. But NC registered its presence in Anantnag district where it won the Pahalgam Seat. A high voter turnout in eight constituencies of Srinagar district, which witnessed an increase of around seven per cent against 2008, proved beneficial for PDP. Srinagar district witnessed 28 per cent voter turnout against 21.93 per cent in 2008. However, Omer Abdullah tweeted ahead of declaration of results by the Election Commision, "congratulation to Ashraf Mir (PDP) for his victory in Sonwar. I wish him and the people all good luck for the next 6 years. He is now my local MLA." As the results were declared, PDP supporters and party workers present at the counting centre broke into jubilation. They celebrated by bursting fire crackers and raised slogans in favour of Mohammad Ashraf Mir and Altaf Bukhari. Mir after his victory said, "It is not my victory; it is the victory of people of Sonwar constituency. People voted for change as they know nothing has been done on ground level by the National Conference-led Congress government." Notably, in his first ever electoral battle in 2014, PDP's business-tycoon-turned-politician Altaf Ahmad Bukhari has weighed heavy on National Conference Provincial President and former MLA from Amira Kadal Nasir Aslam Wani. In past, Amira Kadal has also largely remained an NC stronghold. However, after September floods, the electoral prospects of Wani had suffered a major blow when the state government failed to reach flood affected peoples. |
