15 NC-Cong ministers, including CM, DyCM bite dust

JAMMU/SRINAGAR, Dec 23: Fifteen ministers, including the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah and his deputy Tara Chand, of the ruling National Conference- Congress alliance tasted defeat today after poll results for the state legislative Assembly polls were declared today. In all, eight ministers from Congress, six from NC and one from Democratic Party Nationalist lost the elections.
Three Congress cabinet ministers, including Deputy Chief Minister lost to debutant Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) candidates in Jammu region.
The two time winner and former PHE Minister Sham Lal Sharma from Akhnoor constituency, who was a minister in People's Democratic Party led government in 2002 and National Conference Party in 2009 lost to Bhartiya Janta Party candidate Rajeev Sharma by huge margin of 9380 votes. Sham Lal Sharma bagged 32521 votes while Rajeev Sharma succeeded to get 41901.
The Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand lost to Dr Krishan Lal of BJP with huge margin of 14790 votes. Tara Chand was also two time winner and remained speaker of the Legislative Assembly in PDP government while he enjoyed Deputy CM ship in NC led government. Tara Chand received 21243 votes while his rival Dr Krishan Lal bagged 36033 votes.
Another Congress heavyweight Raman Bhalla who was also two time winner lost to BJP candidate Kavinder Gupta with margin of 16777. Raman Bhalla secured 39902 votes while Kavinder Gupta got 56679.
Other Congress heavyweights in Jammu region, Cooperatives Minister Manohar Lal Sharma and R&B Minister Abdul Majid Wani lost to their rivals from BJP.
National Conference leader and Planning Minister Ajay Kumar Sadhotra lost to BJP incumbent MLA Sukhnandan Kumar from Marh Assembly segment in Jammu district.
In Kashmir region senior Congress leaders, Health Minister Taj Mohiuddin, Tourism Minister Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Haj and Auqaf Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed lost their seats from Uri, Dooru and Kokernag respectively, while Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir (DPN), who is considered to be a Congressman had to bite the dust.
While the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah lost from Sonawar Assembly segment by a margin of over 4,700 votes, the National Conference leader managed to win from the Beerwah constituency in Budgam district by a slender margin of over 1,000 votes. Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather and Social Welfare Minister Sakina Itoo (both NC) were humbled by voters.
Law Minister Mir Saifullah and CAPD Minister Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan (both NC) lost to Peoples Conference's Bashir Ahmad Dar and Sajjad Ghani Lone, respectively. Additional General Secretary of National Conference Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, who is also uncle of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, was distant fourth.
The NC ministers who won their seats included Rural Development Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar, Forest Minister Mian Altaf, Higher Education Minister Mohammad Akbar Lone, Mubarak Gul Speaker and MoS Animal Husbandry Nazir Ahmad Khan Gurezi. While Congress ministers who retained their seats included Urban Development Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora, MoS Power Vikar Rasool and MoS Revenue Aijaz Khan.
