Arrest of separatists was a local decision
12/24/2014 12:06:41 AM
The Hurriyat Conference leaders have expressed resentment over the prolonged detention of political leaders, especially those belonging to the separatist camps. Terming continuous detention of political prisoners in Kashmir as 'human rights violation', Hurriyat Conference (G) has sought intervention of international human rights organizations to ensure their release. The Hurriyat leaders have termed the continuous detention of separatist leaders including JKLF chairman Muha-mmad Yasin Malik besides Masarat Alam Bhat, Mushtaq-ul-Islam, Abdul Gani Bhat, Abdul Subhan Wani, Nasir Abdullah Palhallan, Mufti Abdul Ahad, Parvaiz Ahmad Tarzoo and Abdul Samad Inqalabi as "unjustified and illegal.""Hurriyat Conference demands immediate release of all the political prisoners. During the elections, Hurriyat leaders and pro-freedom youths were detained in different jails, police stations and interrogation centres, many of them were although released but many more are still under detention." Well the leaders belonging to the camp of separatists should know that if their colleagues were jailed or detained there should have been some specific reason for that.It is natural when the poll process is underway and to ensure incident free polling and pre-poll campaign the state Government is supposed to initiate steps for creating an atmosphere which was conducive for peaceful polling.
In the light of repeated poll boycott calls given by the separatists the Government had to take various steps for preventing them from enforcing their poll boycott call. And it was because of these steps that the just ended election resulted in highest ever polling percentage during the last 27 years. Not only the Assembly polling recorded a very high percentage the way there were no incidents of violence and attempts at disrupting the poll process seem to be the result of a crackdown on separatists. Yes, those who demand the release of all political detainees are right because once the poll process has been completed there was no sense in keeping these political activists in detention. And once they were released the authorities should persuade the JKLF chairman,Mohd.Yasin Malik to give up his indefinite hunger strike.
Though the demand for the release of political detainees is genuine after the end of the polling those who have tried to seek intervention by the international human rights organizations for ensuring release of the arrested political leaders seems to be simply a bid to internationalise the Kashmir issue. And those who allege that whosoever be in power in Jammu and Kashmir has to work as per the guidelines of the Central Government are totally wrong because law and order in India is a state Government responsibility. If some political activists have been detained the decision was taken by the state authorities including the police.
And to say that Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, or his advisers had taken a decision on whom to detain or whom to arrest is totally wrong and baseless. Yes,on the request of the state Government’s the central, rather the union Home Ministry sends additional companies of paramilitary forces and that is what was done during the Assembly election.Ultimately it is the state authorities and agencies that decide about the ways and means for maintaining peace. If for maintaining peace detaining some political activists and separatist leaders had become imperative the decision had been taken by the state authorities and after the arrests were made the union Home Ministry was simply informed about it. It will be better if the separatists stop blaming theCcentre for all the decisions taken by the local authorities in Kashmir.
