KVK organizes training programme on Self Help Groups

Jammu, Nov 4: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu organized training programme on Self Help Groups (SHGs) at organic village Talwara of Reasi district which was attended by the farm women of the village.
The programme was organised under the able guidance of Associate Director Extension of SKUAST-J, Dr. R.K. Arora. Dr. Banarsi initiated the programme with the warm welcome of participants. Dr. Banarsi Lal, Scientist &Head of KVK, Reasi elaborated the methods of Self Help Groups (SHGs) formation and management and gave a detailed view of benefits of SHGs.
He said that SHGs formation has immense scope in hilly areas and can play a vital role in eradication of poverty from these areas. He further narrated farm women can start micro- entrepreneurships at village level by working in groups. He further said that SHGs of farm women are made by saving the money which further can be utilized by interloaning at 1 or 2% of rate of interest within the group. He further gave a detailed view of principles of SHGs.
He guided that group President should be having democratic traits and he/she should consider the opinion of other members of the group. He narrated that group members should have fortnight meetings and special book record of groups should be maintained.
He further said that while making groups homogeneity of the members should always be taken into consideration because homogeneity helps to sustain the group. He emphasized on the credibility among the groups members.
Dr. Banarsi also said that SHGs should specify their objectives well in advance. He also suggested the farmers that after saving the money, the SHGs should be linked with the banks. He further guided the farm women that they can start entrepreneurship in pickle making, jam making, candle making, soap making, food processing, raincoat making, dairy farming, mushroom cultivation, floriculture etc. in their groups.
