Naeem rejects Jammu's demand for adequate representation in assembly
BJP of Kashmir

Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 4: The people of Jammu province voted for the BJP en-block in 2014 and it created history of sorts by winning 25 seats in the 87-member House. It could have won four more seats had it not bungled in the constituencies like Nagrota and Bishnah. The people of Jammu had voted with the hope that the BJP, among other things, would ensure appointment of delimitation commission aimed at ending age-old discrimination with the people of Jammu province in terms inadequate representation in the assembly. The BJP had since decades made due representation to Jammu in the state's highest law-making body the cornerstone of its manifestos, speeches, press conferences and statements. It was this which had filled the aggrieved people of Jammu province with hope.
However, reports from Kashmir clearly suggest that the PDP has rejected the idea of appointing delimitation commission, saying it is not possible before the 2031 census. It said the Jammu & Kashmir Government had banned not only delimitation of the constituencies after every ten year but also banned even rationalization of the existing constituencies.
It was none other than the Education Minister, Government's spokesperson and PDP's ideologue who rejected the demand seeking appointment of delimitation commission." Delimitation exercise cannot be undertaken till 2026," Akhtar reportedly said.
It bears recalling that it was in February 2002 that the state government had banned delimitation and rationalization of assembly constituencies by amending the Jammu & Kashmir Representation of People Act and the Jammu & Kashmir Constitution. The amendment said that no delimitation commission could be appointed before the 2031 census operation was over. In other words, it said that the delimitation could be appointed only in the middle of the fourth decade of the 21st century and that too if the amendments were withdrawn.
Ironically, the BJP has thought it prudent to not react and allow the PDP to carry the day. It is unfortunate that a party that sought and got mandate from Jammu in the name of Jammu has become an extension of the Congress and become a party to the anti-Jammu act. The BJP can't treat the people of Jammu province this way. It can do it only at its own peril.
