India tells UN Assembly Pakistan trying to abuse self-determination concept | | | dia is considered to be the highly democratic country and fair and free elections are held regularly in Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan does not stop in abusing the concept of self-determination. The man who heads the hardliners among the separatists, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, too used to contest the Assembly elections till 1987 and many a times he had won and occupied a seat in the state Assembly where laws are made. And the same man is parroting in favour of granting right of self-determination to people in Jammu and Kashmir. If holding free and fair elections in Jammu and Kashmir in which people participate and cast their votes is not self-determination what then is the UN resolution ?India has told the United Nations that its citizens were repeatedly facing terror attacks by "proxies" of Pakistan, which continues to abuse the concept of self-determination to bolster "territorial aggrandisement" against it. What is ironical and amazing is the way that people in Pakistan have been denied basic fundamental rights including right to freedom of speech and expression, still Islamabad rakes up the question of alleged denial of democratic rights to the people in Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan, whose own people have been deprived of their democratic rights for most of its history and which continues to illegally occupy a part of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir and rules it as a virtual colony, repeatedly indulges in the abuse of the concept of self-determination to bolster its agenda of territorial aggrandisement through terrorism against India," counsellor in the Permanent Mission of India to the U.N., Mayank Joshi, told the General Assembly. Strongly rejecting Pakistan's "ritual propaganda" on the right to self-determination and the "baseless allegations" made by it,. Joshi has said India is the world's largest democracy and free and fair elections are held regularly in Jammu and Kashmir. India had repeatedly pointed out that Pakistan would serve its people better if it could introspect about the challenges faced by its society "instead of setting sights on territories of their neighbours in flagrant violation of all international norms of behavior. During he last over 27 years Pakistan has launched a proxy war against India in Jammu and Kashmir simply with the intention of incorporating J&K with Pakistan. Had people been in favour of getting incorporated with Pakistan they would have boycotted the Assembly elections and refused to form the Governments of their choice. The UN has been told that Pakistan is, without any tangible reason, meddling in the internal affairs of India and in this connection India has cited the proxy war as a case of interference in the internal matters of India. By now the international community has seen through these misleading attempts by Pakistan. India, therefore, does not intend to engage any further on this issue."It may sound wrong if Pakistan believed that settlement of the Kashmir issue could ensure peace in the region. India, that too rightly, believes that if Pakistan stops exporting terror to India and other countries it would ensure peace in the South Asian region. |
