Murder accused denied bail | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 4 : First additional sessions judge M A Chowdhary today rejected the bail application of a murder accused. Ranjit Singh was arrested for allegedly murdering Surinder Kumar alias Shinda of Akhnoor in 2011. The alleged incident took place on the bank of river Chenab on September 5, 2011 while celebrations for the election of one Shamsher Singh in panchayat elections were in progress. The party had been thrown by Shamsher's son Sikandar Singh. According to the police case, petitioner Ranjit had allegedly stabbed Shinda of Akhnoor in his chest, resulting in his death. Police had later arrested the accused and also recovered the weapon of offence (a sharp-edged weapon) from him. The problem erupted between them over an act of sodomy committed on one Channi Manhas allegedly by co-accused Rakesh Kumar and Sham Singh. When Shinda also attempted to have this unnatural offence with Channi, the petitioner stabbed him in the chest as a result of which he died. The judge, after hearing the two sides, observed that the grant of bail to the accused would provide him an opportunity of tampering with the evidence. "Though the case in hand is five years old but the prosecution has examined most of the witnesses in this case. For bail, the petitioner has made sole plea of the eyewitnesses turning hostile and no other ground has been made. It will not be in the interest of justice to allow his application for grant of bail as this court has no circumstance to take a view that the accused has not committed the murder," he said. With these observations, the court rejected his bail application.
