CA&PD deptt facilitates in pilferage of ration supply in summer capital | | | Majid Nabi SRINAGAR, Oct 17: Contrary to the government's recent directive of ensuring free ration to flood affected people of Kashmir, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD) Department that speaks loud about the surplus supply of ration in Srinagar city has pilfered hundreds of tons rice from free quota. Sources in the CA&PD department told Early Times that thousands of quintals of rice was embezzled from free ration quota meant for the flood hit people of the Srinagar city. "More or less 20,000 kilograms of rice were embezzled in Batwara area alone and no one musters courage to spell out as to where such a huge quantity vanished," an official in CA&PD department said wishing anonymity. He said that there are six hundred ration card holders in Batwara who received only 15000 kilograms of rice against 30,000 kilograms as per the Government directive to allocate 50 kilograms rice per household for the period of one month. Pertinently, the Omar Abdullah led coalition Government had announced free ration, to the victims for six months which includes 50 kilograms for one month and 30 kilograms for another five months. "Besides dispensing only 15000 kilograms last month people in Batwara were provided with only 30 kilograms of rice against 35 for the month of October with 18000 kilograms missing. Initially we were asked to pore over the requirement per ration depot but now the quantity of rice to be distributed is decided by the department," he added. Sources further said that same is the situation in other areas of the city where embezzlement of hundreds of tons rice was recorded. "In Upper Soura and Shri Bhat ration depots where the total number according to official records of ration holders is 2500, consumers only get 62,500 kilograms of rice as against 1,25,000 for the month of September and 75000 for the this month with the total of 2,12,500 kilograms missing," sources added. They said that the missing ration as per their knowledge is either being put up for sale in black or pocketed by the higher-ups. "Same is the situation with every ration ghat in Srinagar where people did not received the exact quantity of rice and one can simply realize as to how much of free quota should be grappled during one a half months," sources said. Citing the example of Sonwar which was the worst hit of deluge, sources said that there are around 500 households having ration card however only 12500 kilograms of rice has been distributed there as against total of 25000 kilograms last month while only 2500 kilograms for this month with the total of 52,500 kilograms missing," Sources said that the issue needs to be thoroughly investigated by a credible agency and the guilty officials involved in rice scam be dealt with iron hands. |
