Municipal Council turns town into garbage dumping site | 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' has no takers in Anantnag | | Saahil Suhail
Anantnag, Oct 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Program) has no takers in this southern district as the Municipal Council of the town continues to dump garbage on roads and public places in absence of dumping site.Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Swachh Bharat Campaign' on October 2, to realize Mahatma Gandhi's dream of clean India. Heaps of garbage have been dumped in general bus stand of the town as well as along roads including in front of the Municipal committee's Office located adjacent to district court complex in the town. Locals alleged that Municipal Council is dysfunctional after flood water receded in the town and has not managed to clean the lanes and drains fully despite having revenue income in crores. They said that Anantnag Municipal Councils is dumping garbage at vital public places in the town at a time when whole nation is responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Program). "How one can expect satisfactory sanitation from this municipal Council which has failed even clearing garbage in front of their office." A local resident Mushtaq Ahmad said. He alleged that corruption and wrong doings of the authorities have left the municipal council dry. He said that the sweepers collect the garbage from lanes of the town and are then dump that along the road sides as the authorities failed to acquire the land at Donipowa meant for dumping site. "We fail to understand what actually they are doing, what we are witnessing is horrible. The sweepers clean the lanes but are dumping the garbage on roads after which their vehicles lift the garbage and finally dump it on either in general bus stand or on river banks," residents of Nai-Basti Anantnag told Early Times. Locals said that in absence of a dumping site, Municipal Council Anantnag has turned the town into a dumping site. "The district administration and Municipal Council Anantnag are not even going for disinfectant sprays like phenyl to avoid spread of diseases," locals said, adding heaps of garbage that has piled up on roads were breeding insects and could be reason for outbreak of deadly diseases. Officials in Municipal Council Anantnag (MCA) have already identified a huge patch of land in Donipawa area as dumping site but with illegal stone quarries continuing to operating there the plan could not be executed. Repeated attempts failed to contact Executive Officer, MCA, Shabir Ahmad as he didn't attended the repeated calls from Early Times. |
