Omar lone man standing in demanding for deferment of assembly elections | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Oct 17: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah seems to be the only mainstream politician in the state who believes that time is not ripe for holding assembly elections at this point of time. This is despite the fact that both Jammu & Kashmir Police and Army have made it clear that they are ready to provide security for the assembly elections. Omar's bid to get the assembly elections deferred was scuttled since he failed to convince Home Minister, Rajnath Singh in this regard. The CM in the meeting with Home Minister had urged for deferment of elections since the state has been badly hit by ravaging flood. However, Singh told him that both the elections and rehabilitation of flood affected people would go simultaneously. Omar knows it fully well that since the coalition government headed by him in the state failed to provide succour to flood hit people, his party would face a drubbing in state more so in Kashmir valley. The government has miserably come to rescue of marooned people and this is going to cost National Conference very badly in the next assembly elections. The state government has failed to provide relief to the people who lost their houses in the recent flood. Same is the case with the people who lost their dear ones during the flood. Given the situation anger is there among the people and as such one should not wonder about the opinion of Omar about the next assembly elections in state. Political analysts believe that the dodgy performance of state government in coming to the rescue of flood affected people has nerved the coalition partners National Conference and Congress. They said that Congress may face the heat in Jammu while as its coalition partner National Conference is destined to face music in Kashmir. "The drubbing faced by National Conference in the recent parliamentary elections would be repeated in the assembly elections. The vote share for NC in the assembly elections would come down drastically and the party would win less number of seats this time around. Once considered safe bastions for the party are no more there and the party stalwarts may bite the dust this time around," said political analysts. The apprehension of clean sweep at the hands of its opponents has nerved Omar and it is this reason only that has forced him to plead for the deferment of assembly elections. The Chief Minister fears for the well-being of his party and he knows it fully well that if elections are held in near future his party would lose very badly. He also knows that his party is all set to face the hardest time since its inception. |
