Pak and China continue to needle India
10/17/2014 10:33:08 PM
If there is anything common between
China and Pakistan it is their lack of depend
ability. Over the years India has tried its best to keep Beijing and Islamabad in good humour and promote cordial ties. But both Pakistan and China, the two nations being all weather friends, have another common thing and that is their relish for needling India. It is one step forward and two steps backward policy that is being adopted by China and Pakistan in their relations vis-a-vis India. Those who have been running the Government in India have not been able to predict the swing in the mood of Pakistan. While on one hand Pakistan has been pleading for holding bilateral talks for settlement of some issues, especially the Kashmir issue, on the other it has not suspended its support to proxy war against India. It has not abandoned its support to militants and has not suspended its assistance to terrorists in infiltrating into Jammu and Kashmir. And the story with Beijing is akin to the one being followed by Islamabad. The only difference is that China does not take up the border or the boundary issue with India in the international fora, including the United Nations. During the current summer months there have been series of Chinese incursions in Ladakh region and after the Chinese President, Xi Jinping's visit to India, the border situation had witnessed marked improvement with Chinese troops retreaing to their area.
Now after about three weeks' peace on the LAC China has reacted sharply against India's plan on constructing a 2000 km long road on the Indian territory along the MC Mahon line. China sharply reacted to India's plans to construct a road network along the McMahon line in Arunachal Pradesh and expressed hope that India will not take any action which may complicate the situation before a final settlement is reached to end the boundary dispute. The Chinese reaction has come soon after Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju stated that plans are afoot to construct a road network along the international boundary from Mago-Thingbu in Tawang to Vijaynagar in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh to match the China's infrastructure development. China believes that there is a dispute about the eastern part of the China- India border. Before final settlement is reached Beijing hopes that India will not take any action that may further complicate the situation. Wittingly or unwittingly China wants India to jointly safeguard the peace and tranquility of the border area and create favourable conditions for the final settlement of the border issue.
This way China has every right to develop road connectivity on the border in Tibet and on the border in Sikkim but India, according to Beijing, has no right to construct roads on its soil along the Mc Mahon line. This is so because China has been laying claim on Arunachal Pradesh claiming that this Indian state is part of China, India's concerns arise out of extensive road, rail air network developed by China in Tibet which could play pivotal in moving the troops and equipment at a greater speed in the rugged Himalayan region. Besides extensive highways, China's rail network came close to Sikkim border and Beijing has announced plans to build a new rail network up to Nyingchi which is close to the border of Arunachal Pradesh. This way China has not concealed its extra territorial ambition. And this is what has prompted and motivated India to upgrade the security grid on the entire LAC that divides China from India. It is not only that India is keen to upgrade the security grid in Arunachal Pradesh border but in Ladakh too. In fact during the previous series of meetings between India and China the boundary dispute has come up for discussion. But judged from the inflexible stand of China the process of dialogue is yet to bear fruits. China is playing the game similar to the one being played by Pakistan. Whenever India and Pakistan have held parleys for settling bilateral issues those talks have failed because of Pakistan's inflexible attitude on Kashmir. Pakistan wants Kashmir and Chin wants Arunachal Pradesh. Let the two display flexibility and instead of raking up the Kashmir and Arunachal issues China and Pakistan should work for promoting peace and for developing cordial ties that could guarantee economic prosperity.
