Nail-biting contest between PDP, NC | Khanyar Constituency profile | | Bashir Assad
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 11: Khanyar constituency in Srinagar city is all set towitness a straight but nail-biting contest between NC stalwart, Ali Mohammad Sagar and PDP multi-millionaire Mohammad KhurshidAalam. Though entire Srinagar city going to polls on December 14 is likely to throw surprises, the most interesting but nail-biting contest is expected for sure in Khanyar constituency. Khanyar like AmiraKadal, Habakadal and Eidgah are known for least polling and boycott, however, it has been traditionally one of the most loyal NC constituency. Given the possible impact of poll boycott, the political parties in fray are worried about this seat. Both NC and PDP have announced their candidates. Ali Mohammad Sagar NC while as the veteran trade union leader-turn-politician is representing PDP. The constituency has 86 polling stations in total and its electoral college is just below 60,000. There are only 1800 migrant votes in the constituency. The polling percentage in the constituency since 1996 has remained between 5 to 10%. According to political observers Khanyar is, for the first time, witnessing a contest between equals. Both sagar and Aalam have muscle power, both are resourceful, both can invest hugely. However, Sagar has the advantage of being Minister with administrative backup while Aalam is the best known organizer. According to the observers, Khurshid Aalam only can take Sagar head-on and it is perhaps this realization that NC leadership from party spokespersons to working president, Omar Abdullah, all are targeting Aalam left and right. Both Aalam andSagar assert they are proud residents of Srinagar. And both have been laying their claim on representing the Srinagar. Some people foresee that Aalam has developed a better understanding of the constituency and his proximity with the people will certainly acts as a pre-cursor as to how people will behave in polls. Since he has been on forefront in trade union politics since last thirty years, Aalam is known for organizational skills. For UbaidHamid, of Nawhatta "unemployment, corruption and misuse of power are serious issues." Khurshid Aalam says "anger and hatred of NC among people is the point on which PDP or any other party can divert vote share. My job is to convert this hatred into vote for PDP." Aalam seems to have "got the pulse" of problems and issues in his constituency. "I have visited all the 8 wards of my constituency and am getting a feel of what people are facing. Basically all these issues are failures of NC and people want change," he says and adds, "PDP is that change." Aalam does not subscribe to the impact of boycott on success. "You don't see 100 per cent voting in any country. One who has to vote will vote in any case." |
