11/12/2014 12:07:56 AM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 11: A very fundamental question that still remains unanswered even after three years of Haji Yusuf's death is where did the huge amount of money go after the media spotlight on that event of 2011 started fading?
In September 2011, the present Congress candidate for Ganderbal Assembly seat, Mohammad Yusuf Bhat had alleged Haji Yusuf accepted a sum of Rs. 82 lacs from him for getting him an MLCs berth and finally Minister's chair in the NC-Congress coalition. Another NC leader, Abdul Salam Rishi also said Haji Yusuf had taken Rs. 35 lacs from him for getting him an MLC's berth.
When Yusuf Bhat brought this to the notice of the CM he was furious and summoned all the three of them to his official residence in Gupkar Road. From Gupkar Haji Yusuf was taken into custody by the sleuths of the State Crime Branch. He was taken ill during the same night as per official statement and shifted to police hospital where he died.
There has been a commission of enquiry into the mysterious death of Haji Yusuf that gave a clean chit to the CM. After the findings of the Bedi commission that went into the circumstances those led to Haji Yusuf's death made its findings public both the public interest and the media focus were taken off that fateful development.
The mist crucial question about the money that exchanged hands and the allegations of Haji Yusuf's family that the same had been given to NC patron Dr. Farooq Abdullah remain unreplied.
Did Yusuf Bhat receive the money back? Did Salam Rishi tell the truth that Haji Yusuf had returned the major portion of his money and only some amount was left unreturned?
These are vital questions those brook answers now that both Yusuf Bhat and those Haji Yusuf said were the beneficiaries of that huge amount of clandestinely received money are seeking public office as high and as respected as that of the people's representatives in the August state Assembly.
