Party selling mandates, allege Wachi Cong workers | Stage protest, demand ticket for Shah instead of Wani | | Majid Nabi
Early Times Report
srinagar, Nov 11: Outraged at the decision of the party high command to give mandate to an "outsider" MaroofWani instead of senior leader Abdul Qayoom Shah, scores of Congress workers from Wachi constituency in south Kashmir staged a protest in Srinagar today alleging that Wani had greased the palms of the senior JKPCC leaders to get the party ticket to contest the forthcoming assembly elections. Accusing the state Congress unit of 'cheating its workers', the party activists from Wachi assembly constituency assembled at LalChowk here this afternoon and demanded that party should reconsider its decision. "We want justice and revoke the candidature of non party workers," said dozens of block level activists of the Congress party. The protesters threatened self immolation and complete election boycott in case the high command failed to give the mandate to Abdul Qayoom Shah. "We have taken Congress party to every household in Wachi constituency and worked day night to strengthen its roots however the recent decision of party high command of giving party mandate to non party men who is even not affiliated with the district body has disappointed us," said Mohammad Ashraf Shah a party delegate. He said that the workers in Wachi constituency before announcing mandates had held thorough deliberations with state Congress chief, ProfSaifuddinSoz, who assured them that the mandate from Wachi constituency would be given to Congress District President, Abdul Qayoom Shah, however the moment mandates were announced Shah was again ignored and MaroofWani, who according to them greased the palms of some top leaders was awarded mandate. The protesters accused the senior Congress leader MakhanLalFotedar, of receiving Rs 20 lakhs from MaroofWani to promote him as party candidate from Wachi Assembly constituency the bastion of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mehbooba Mufti. "This is sheer injustice with us. Qayoom Shah has fortified the Congress in Wachi constituency and convinced people here to support the party. It is unfortunate that party high command has ignored a sincere worker at this crucial juncture," Mushtaq Ahmad Thokar another activist claimed, adding we along with our families would set ourselves on fire and start a back breaking boycott in Wachi constituency as a mark of protest in case the mandate is not given to Shah. "It was decided in party high command meeting that Abdul Qayoom Shah will be the candidate from Wachi but we fail to understand how MaroofWani was nominated. Maroof is a lesser known person he has never attended any meeting nor has he done any exemplary job this is only because of Fotedar's blessings that he was given with mandate long live duplicity? Mukhtar Ahmad another angry protester said. |
