PHQ learns from the past; directs district heads to hire vehicles for Assembly elections | | | Sumit Sharma Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 11: Learning lesson from the last Parliamentary elections, Police Headquarters (PHQ), has directed all district heads (Superintendents of Police) to hire vehicles for police officers deputed for the Assembly elections, date of which has been announced by the Election Commission of India recently. The PHQ gave directions after it was baffled from the double claims made by Armed Police and District Police for the vehicles hired for the police officers to ferry them during the Parliamentary elections. Highly placed sources informed that the PHQ has given directions to the district SPs to arrange/ hire the vehicles for Assembly elections, adding, armed police has also been directed to make in coordination with the district SPs to cooperate them for smooth conduct of the Assembly elections. Pertinently, ET in its 19 October edition had published report titled 'PHQ baffled by double claim', pointing out discrepancy in accounts in which double claims were made by district police Rajouri and armed police for vehicles they hired for Parliamentary elections. Sources further said that earlier, a day after news of double claim was published in ET, DGP K. Rajindra, chaired a meeting with the senior police officers where he directed all district heads to hire vehicles for the Assembly elections. Worthwhile to mention here that PHQ started muzzling head after incongruity surfaced in district Rajouri where multiple vehicles were used for single police officer to ferry him for smooth conduct of elections. The discrepancy surfaced in accounts submitted by district Rajouri, where district police hired the vehicles for cops deployed for the elections duty, however, the armed police officers who were deployed for the duty in Rajouri arrived with the vehicles hired by the armed police. The issue of double claim came to limelight when district Rajouri police and armed police presented the bills for the vehicles they hired from the private contractors, reportedly hundreds in numbers, for withdrawal against the same. PHQ, later, entrusted the responsibility to the police team so constituted headed by the DIG CID Surinder Kumar Gupta as the amount went into lakhs of rupees. The audit in this connection is still in progress. |
