| Obama takes over, says terrorists can’t outlast | | | | AGENCIES
Washington, Jan 20: Beginning a presidency towards which not only America but the whole world seems to be watching with hope, Barack Obama said in his inaugural speech " We have chosen hope over fear and terrorists can't outlast us."
America's first black president, Barack Hussein Obama said on Tuesday that the nation must choose "hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord" to overcome the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
In frigid temperatures, an exuberant crowd of more than a million packed the National Mall and parade route to celebrate Obama's inauguration in a high noon ceremony. Cheering and waving, spectators stretched from the inaugural platform at the U.S. Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial far in the distance.
With 11 million Americans out of work and trillions of dollars lost in the stock market's tumble, Obama emphasized that his biggest challenge is to repair the tattered economy left behind by outgoing President George W. Bush.

Jammu, Jan 20: The Supreme Court has taken up for hearing a petition filed by Panthers Party leader Bhim Singh challenging the Election Commission decision of issuing separate notifications for election to four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission today issued schedule for the election process which clearly underlined that there will be three separate notifications for the four seats.
The Supreme Court will examine on Friday the Election Commission’s decision to conduct biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha in three phases for four seats instead of one phase.

Jammu, Jan 20: With a sharp decrease in terror incidents last year, which also saw huge turnout during the almost incident-free legislative elections, 2008 remained the most peaceful time in the troubled Jammu and Kashmir since 1990.
According to official figures, the number of militancy related incidents came down to three digits - 708 - for the first time in the nearly two decades of separatist insurgency during which 42,876 people have been killed.
The dead include 16,832 civilians, 5,204 security personnel and 20,840 militants.
The figures indicate that from 1990 to 2008, a total of 67,430 militancy related incidents have been registered in Jammu and Kashmir.
