| Eid today, Navratras throw festivity | | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 30: The Muslim holy festival of Eid-ul-Fitr is being celebrated tomorrow after a late night announcement to this effect was made by the Imam of Jammu’s Jamia Masjid.
Confusion prevailed till late evening as the crescent was not clearly spotted anywhere or any confirmation made by the Muslim Clergy. It was late was late in the night when the Imam of Jammu’s Jamia Masjid endorsed the reports of crescent having been seen by the Hilal Committees (committee to spot crescent and declare Eid) of Kashmir and Pakistan.
However, in most part of countries Eid will be celebrated on October 2. The Shahi Imam of Jamia Masjid announced this evening that Eid shall be celebrated on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Navratra festivity has gripped the region with major attractions in the holy town of Katra and in Jammu. Advisor to Governor Dr Sudhir Singh Bloeria inaugurated the Navratra festival at Katra this morning which was attended by thousands of people drawn from various parts of country.

JAMMU, Sept 30: As many as 721 devotees have been killed in major temple stampedes across the country in last five years. This includes over 150 killed in today’s incident in Jodhpur.
Following is the list of major temple accidents that occurred across the country in the past five years:
• August 27, 2003: 39 pilgrims killed, 125 injured when faithfuls who were waiting to bathe surged over a flimsy fence triggering a stampede at Kumbh Mela bathing festival in Nasik, Maharashtra.
• January 25, 2005: 340 devotees trampled to death during an annual pilgrimage at Mandhra Devi temple in Maharashtra.

JODHPUR, Sept 30: Over 150 people were crushed to death and 55 others injured in a stampede early this morning caused by a rush of devotees in the Chamunda Devi temple in the 15th century Mehrangarh Fort on a hillock here on the first day of Navaratri festival.
In a virtual repeat of the Naina Devi temple stampede in Himachal Pradesh on August 3, in which 162 people were killed, 147 devotees, mostly men, died when they were trampled upon by other pilgrims as doors of the temple opened for worship at dawn, according to Divisional Commissioner, Jodhpur, Kiran Soni Gupta.
